Pierce Invitational  5/23/1999 The first race of the 1999 season was a hell of a day. Conditions were wind SE at 18-22 knots, 3-4' seas, and rain. The course was YN (NH1 off New Haven to N4 off Milford) some 14 miles of pounding and surfing. We planned on 9 crew, but ended up with five (seriously undermanned), with two sick-outs and I sent the two girls home. Those who went for the ride were Jeff, Mark, Chris, Bill, and Joe. Our class ended up with just two boats, a Soveral 26 with a RockStar crew and us. On the up side of that, we got second! Hey not too bad considering.... (the gift horse). We sailed with the blade and a reefed main, and this time we didn't chicken out on using the (my only one) big .5oz chute for the run home. 2 hr trip to NH1, 45 min back to Milford! Nothing Broken! and only 2 or 3 roundups! Once Mark got used to keeping the boat under the chute in the waves, we were able to keep going fast (regularly in the 9's and 10+ on occasion). Big thanks to the crew who did make it, it was a blast!
WSC Commodores     Cup    6/26/1999 Nice day. Winds were good, seas low, sun shining, 3 races to go. We had to op down to canvas due to missing 5 of my usual 8-9 crew. The first race good start, we were out front approaching the windward mark, when we got a wrap on the winch in a tack. Took a knife and two boats to solve the situation. We flew the AP1 which was a little too much for the conditions, but I don't have a #2, so we rode on the rail. Result: 3rd finisher, corrected 3rd, course was DWS, winds were SW 14-16 kts, seas 1-2'. Second race we again had a decent start, on the line at the gun, a couple boats down from the windward end.  We were again out front approaching the windward mark where we were fouled by a port crosser at the mark. He still thinks that's legal. I didn't have a protest flag available so I loose. Winds, seas, course were the same as the first race, and the result 2nd finisher, corrected to 3rd. The third race the winds eased a bit which put us into our performance range. Great start, on the line at the committee boat end at the gun, first by far to the windward mark, and only gained distance from there. We finished 4-5 min in front of the next finisher in our class, and only 2 min behind Bruce in the following class. Result: 1st, course was DWDWS, winds SW 10-12, seas 1-2'. Overall results 3-3-1 gave us a 2nd for the series. Not too bad. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Wally, and Mike, Thanks again folks!
Port Jefferson Race&Rendezvous         7/17/1999 Beautiful day! Winds were a pleasant 10-12 out of the SW with minimal wave action. The course was Milford R16 to Port Jefferson C11, almost a straight shot. The staggered start put us starting 26:45 after the first boat, which we nailed on the money. We then proceeded to walk thru most of the fleet until about a mile off the finish when the wind dropped to 6-8. That along with an uncleaned bottom kept me from getting by the last two boats for the lead. The NM42 (last starter) then came rolling by the three of us up front for the win, we ended up forth overall. Not too bad considering. The party was excellent as usual, great food, drink and company! A big thank you goes out to the Windjammers Officers who put this all together year in and year out, and a special thanks to Clay and crew who manned the start and finish lines of this race.
Milford Yacht Club Invitational              8/7/1999 What was the race committee thinking when they wrote up this course?!   A and B classes:  6 times, 2.5nm @ 215 degrees.  A single windward (kind of) mark, at 1.25 (actually 1.45) nm out at 215 degrees, SIX times! Twelve legs, six sets!   This is a club race, not Block Island Race Week!  The conditions were WSW with about 10 degree southward oscillations, 10-12 knots and 1 foot seas, perfect conditions for the Schock 34.  Each leg was 15 min or less, which after settling down after the set or douse, gave us almost no time to consume a beer, water, or Gatorade and no way to finish a sandwich.  With the backing out of my foredeck guy, and no replacement available, I had to take the job.  I put CJ at the helm, Donny, Mike C. and Mark in the cockpit, Mike G. with me up front, and Monique, Chelsea, and Carol helping mid deck and on the rail.  Approaching the windward mark, I'd get the chute set on the rail, we'd tack onto the layline, Mike G. and I would set the pole, we'd round the mark and set the kite, I'd run back and trim for the downwind leg. At the leeward mark we'd retrieve the chute, Monique and I would repack it, then if we packed fast, I'd be able to sit on the rail for about 2 minutes, the chute would then be brought back up and I'd start the cycle over again, Ground Hog day revisited!  I was one tired SOB.... by the fourth cycle!  What kept me going was seeing the rest of the B class getting further and further behind (along with some of the A class boats who started before us). We had a great start which kept us up front for the entire race (should be there considering we were scratch boat by between 21 and about 70 seconds/mile) The boat which was the biggest threat to our taking the class had a major equipment failure and had to retire after the second downwind leg.  We were gaining on them some early, but it probably wouldn't have been enough at the end, seeing their withdrawal and how far they were ahead of the third boat, allowed us to concentrate on sailing fast. With only minor mistakes, we took the gun about 14 min in front of the next finisher, and 16 min in front of the corrected second place boat (to whom we owed about 14.5 min).  The after party was good, knowing our results we were able to celebrate, however with a protest hearing going on, the A class never had their results announced, and the Boardman cup was not awarded.  If the late results of the protest hearing stand, MYC will take the cup, if an appeal is heard and successfully reverses the first decision, WSC gets the cup.  Our crew was Jeff, Mark, Monique, Chelsea, CJ, Mike C, Carol, Mike G, and Donny, outstanding job everyone!
WSC Overnight      8/28/1999 4:10 pm start with a course: Middle Ground Light to Faulkners I. and back to Milford N4.  The Crew was Jeff, Pete and Linda, Chris, Donny, Mike G, Bill, and Christian.  Winds were SW 10-14 with seas 1 foot early building a little after dark, then winds went NW after midnight still 10-14, with seas 1-2 feet.  The wind stayed up the whole night!  The fleet was not broken into spinnaker A and B, so we were mid pack to Middle Ground, and stayed about there to the finish.  One exception, a bad rounding of Faulkners including a miserable douse, and the wind shift from SW to NW, allowed one boat to get by us there, then lack of concentration on my part kept us off top speed, and we weren't able to get him back.  We finished at 3:51am, in seventh overall out of twelve boats.  Nice night though, first distance race with this boat.   Gotta work on the attention span thing for all of us.
Milford Yacht Club Last Chance Regatta 9/25/1999 Ok race, fair upwind leg, good beam/broad reach to Middle Ground and back to Milford until the end. We were on our way to the bullet with a probable correction to second or worst third when we got sucked into a wind hole. Every one else walked up on us. We finished second, corrected to fourth out of 6 boats (lost to the third corrected boat by 7 seconds). Damn those wind holes! Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Pete, Linda, Mike G, Mark, Christian, Tina. Course was Point No Point (R18), Middle Ground Can 1, Milford N4 (finish). Conditions were SW 10-12 knots, 1 ft seas.

WSC Last Chance Regatta 9/26/1999

Mediocre up wind leg (took 2+ hours of the 5 allotted), long downwind run to the Housatonic bell (close to 3 hours), with about 45 min left to go from Housatonic bell back to the finish for, you guessed it, a DNF. No one in the class finished in time, however the committee did finish all of us with one exception who dropped out after rounding Housatonic bell and protested the race. Thanks to the one loser the whole fleet gets the DNF (sorry, venting). Nice weekend though, great weather and great company on the boat! Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Pete, Linda, Mike G, Christian, Tina course was NH1, Housatonic bell, finish. Conditions were se 10-12 knots, 1 foot seas.
New Haven Yacht Club Columbus Day Invitational 10/10/1999 RAIN! First leg was a fetch to the end of the breakwater, then a close reach to the NH1 mark. After rounding NH1 we just got set with our chute, when the mast end jaw of the spinpole broke. Metal fatigue, no more jaw! We lashed the pole to the mast, and did dip jibes from there. Worked out ok. More Rain! We finished second and corrected to third. The last finisher corrected to first (and took the overall), and the fourth finisher corrected to second (hmmm, don't ya love phrf). Did I mention that it RAINED! The ride back to Milford was less than pleasant, 25-30kts and 6-8 foot seas. A big thanks to all who joined me for the day, especially given the conditions. Crew was Jeff, Mike G. Mark, Pete, CJ, Rob, Chris, and Bill. Conditions were 10-18 knots (building throughout the day) seas 1-3 feet and RAIN (lots of it) course was West Breakwater, NH1, S, West Breakwater, Middle Breakwater, finish.

The 1999 Thursday Night Logbook
Week One  5/20/1999 The first Thursday night of the 99 season was a typical spring day with winds in the (true) 18-23 knot range out of the NNW. A fast night with good winds and flat water. There were about 12 boats out there all for a single start with course NDSNSNS. Larry Welch ran the RC boat for the night. We flew our new main and the blade. Considering the new main and difficulties in getting a reef in, a late start, no jib up for the first 5 minutes of the race, and being the first sail of the season, we did ok.  Caught and passed a number of boats, and ended up about sixth or seventh over the line. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Mark, Monique, Donny, and Cliff (what happened to you other guys, Chris, Wally, and Bill?!).
Week Two  5/27/1999 Awesome night, perfect mid-spring evening, conditions were flat water and winds NW 15 gusting to 20 on our way out, dropping to 8-12 for most of the race.   Course was NENE. No race committee for 30min or so until Bruce and Joel saved the night. Late start, but at least it was a start! We had another (expletive deleted) start, too close to the pin (can) approaching the gun and definitely didn't want to run it over, but once we got out from under the stbd tackers and moving we did ok. Passed a number of boats, and finished (around 5th I think) just behind all the faster boats and in front of those rated slower. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Walt, Bill, Mark, Monique, Chelsea, Pete, and Linda. Thanks everyone for another fun night!
Week Three  6/3/1999 Another awesome night, NW wind around 10-12, flat water. There were about 15-20
boats out for the night. Better start this week, we were in the front row at the gun, albeit below a number of boats. We quickly tacked to port crossing behind the rest of the front row and in front of the rest of the fleet. This got us to the windward mark just behind the two big C&C's, one of which we got by on the next upwind leg, which is where we finished. Fourth boat over the line behind three sub 100 rated boats, doing ok for the early season! Still with another hour of sunlight we decided to stay out for a while longer where the wind then piped up to 20+. Feathering a bit I got my light #1 into a spreader and tore it again, damn, had to be a negative somewhere on the night. Crew was Jeff, Bill, Walt, Donny, Chris, and Mike. Course was NSNWS. Race committee was Joel, Bruce and company, thanks again guys.
Week Four  6/10/1999 If I could do starts we'd be more competitive. Excuses for this week: 1. The snap shackle holding the roller headsail up opened with about 3min to the start. Dropped the sail into the water! Finally got the #2 Halyard on the sail and it up shortly before the gun. 2. We should have used the #1 and not be lazy in changing off the roller #2. 3. My foredeck guy wanted to try cockpit, learning curve! We crossed the start about 2nd to last, but we did make our way thru the fleet to about eighth out of some 18 boats in the 27+ class. Winds were SE 8-12, Seas 1-2ft, and Course was WS3. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Mark, Monique, Chelsea, Donny, Chris, Regina, Walt, and Mike, race committee was Tumble Home and company.
Week Five  6/17/1999 Didn't Race.
Week Six   6/24/1999 We won the race to the Boat Works party! (didn't quite finish the race on the water).  Crummy start, sailed ugly, went slow. Party after was good.  Course was DWNEN, conditions were 15+ early settling to 10 out of the SW, 1-2 ft seas. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Donny, Tracy, Walt, Terry, Mark, Monique, Chelsea, Cliff and Mike C.
Week Seven   7/1/1999 Didn't Race
Week Eight   7/8/1999 Nice night, winds 10-15 out of the NW, seas less than 1 foot. Another bad start. I missed the first gun and was out of time from there out. Once we worked thru all the traffic on the first leg into clear air at the windward mark, we passed a number of boats, and was catching the fast pack.  Not enough course to get them though, finished about seventh. Course was NDS2, crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Chris, Wally, Don, Tracy, Mark, Mike C.   Race Committee was Kari and company.
Week Nine 7/15/1999 Another breezy night, this is the third week in a row! Winds were a steady SW 14-16 with waves 1-2 feet. We flew the #1 expecting the winds to lay down some, didn't happen, we were pretty seriously overpowered the whole night. We had a good start (finally!), down the line from the preferred end a little, which kept us in clear air for the first leg. At the windward mark we got tangled between two boats which left us in confused water and air causing steerage problems for us on the approach and rounding. This resulted in two very near collisions as we were ping ponging between them half out of control. Once settled down after the mark, we took off on the run at between 7 and 8+ knots catching up to the faster boats who got by us on the upwind leg, though we didn't get by anyone else, finished about 7th or 8th out of 18 or so boats in our class. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Donny, Chris, Mike C, and Larry. Course was DWNDS. Race committee was the Moon Racer crew, nice course Dennis!
Week Ten       7/22/1999 Overcast night with scattered sprinkles, doesn't stop the diehards though.  Winds were relatively light, SW at 6-8kts, seas 0-1 foot. Other than the HTM guys, most of the crew showed up! We had an ok start, mid pack, made it through most of those who started in front of us by the first mark, and two more on the next leg. We finished fifth, behind the Evelyn 32's and the C&C40. Course was DWNDS, race committee was Knot Busy. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Donny, Mark, Monique, Chelsea, Mike G, and Mike C.
Week Eleven  7/29/1999 Awesome night overall! The start and the first ten minutes of the race looked like a cluster f___.  A whisper of breeze and 30 boats tangled in a circle no more than 100 yrds in diameter.  We tacked to port right after crossing the line to clear the boats in front of us, then back to starboard for clear air. We drifted by a number of boats, moving pretty well for almost no wind (clean bottom, good sails), and reached some new breeze before many others.  Once the wind came back up we smoked (S 8-10 no waves), made the first mark 3rd in our class behind the NM42 and one Evelyn 32. We ended the race in that position, finishing in front of a J105, two other Evelyn 32's, the C&C40, and many more! Course was DNDNS shortened to DND.  Race committee was Joel and crew (you guys finish all that beer?!). Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Donny, Walt, Chris, Mark, Mike G. and Mike C. you guys are the bomb!
Week Twelve   8/5/1999 First contact! and I don't mean with the greys! Sorry Pat, from my point of view I'd given you enough room at that mark, unnecessary entanglements for a Thursday night, won't happen again.... water cannons next time!  No damage a little brute force can't fix.  To all of those boats who crossed the start (way) early........  We were early and we were in the second row! We bailed on top of the committee boat, and 360'ed for a relatively good (real) start. Once moving we passed all the slower early starters, and finished in our usual position, behind the C&C 40 and the Evelyns, dirty bottom and slow cruising genoa and all. Conditions were SW 8-10, 1-2 foot seas. Crew was Jeff, Walt, Chris, Mike G, Mike C. and Carol.  Course was DWNES. Race committee was Larry and company.
Week Thirteen  8/12/1999 Light breeze, right winds for the boat. We started in the front line, near the favored end, and moved out from there. Only the NM42 and the C&C40 got past us on the first leg and no one else for the remainder of the race (other than the viper flying his chute, but thats not allowed on thursdays).  We did spar with one of the evelyns for most of the race, but because there were more off wind legs, we were able to keep in front of him.  4-6kts SW, seas less than one foot. Course was DWSES, race committee was Sirius and crew Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Donny, Mark, Monique, Chelsea, and Frank
Week Fourteen  8/19/1999 Ok race, moderate breeze (which less favors us).  Plowed thru the start in a crowd of boats, and made some legs from there.  Ended up at the back of the fast pack, somewhere about 7th.  Wind was 12-14kts SW, seas 1-2 feet. Course was DWSES. Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Mike G, Chris, Regina, Leslie, Mark, Monique, Chelsea, Bill and Maureen Race committee was Konrad and Doug with a representative from Milford Photo who took over 200 photos of this weeks race. Some of the photos will be at MYC for next weeks after event, the rest will be on display at Milford Photo.
Week Fifteen  8/26/1999 Single start, so there were many boats at the line for the gun, though less than a normal Thursday due to the marginal weather.  We were on the less favored side of the line, but with clear air and moving ok.  The breeze was moderate early, but faded after the first half hour.  Kevin and company pinned us right which kept us (and them) from the current favored left.  All those boats on that side were well ahead after the first mark.  Finished mid to back of the fleet.   Crew was Jeff, Walt, Christian, Bill, and Chris.  The wind was ESE 6-10, seas less than 1 foot.  The course was PSWS.
Week Sixteen  9/2/1999 Beautiful weather, albeit light.  A lot of boats out there for this one!  We started on the nonfavored side of the line again, but to windward of most everyone. Once we cleared the slop, we moved pretty well to the first mark, then once around that we took several boats we don't usually pass, even the NM42 was in sight!  Around the leeward mark one of the boats we passed downwind pulled a major foul, doing a Dale Earnhart, bumping one boat out of the way and hitting the N4 mark sliding past a clump of small boats we were sailing around.  He then rolled on into clear air for the (shortened) finish.  Another no rules Thursday!  We finished somewhere around 6th in our class behind the usual boats.  The Port Milford Season End party followed where a good time was had by all.  The course was WNSWS shortened to WNS.  The Crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Bill, Maureen Pete, Rob J, Frank, and Robert.   The Winds were ESE 4-6 with seas 1 foot or less.  Race committee was Larry and crew.
Week Seventeen 9/9/1999 Ok evening, mostly overcast, but still warm and no rain. We had a good start, fair upwind leg. Once we cleared traffic on the reaches to W and S we were able to spread out on the fleet behind. We finished about 5th out of some 12-15 boats. Course was DWSES, Race committee was Full Tilt and crew, Crew was Jeff Mary Lou, Mark, Mike G, Fran, and David
Week Eighteen 9/16/1999 The hurricane that wasn't! Floyd's max winds seen were in the low 40kt range
Week Nineteen 9/23/1999 Race was more difficult with only three people. But we fared ok. Pleasant night, except for the wave action, so the Race + Raft Up Party turned into a Race and Dock party. Conditions were much tamer in the harbor. 5 boats' crews were on hand. Great night! Course was PDES, crew was Jeff, Mary Lou, Mike G. winds were SW 15-18 knots, seas 2-3 feet race committee was Circus Maximus and crew.

1999 Cruising Log Book
PJ Night Crossing Fri 18 - Sun 20 Great time! Nice sail over for 1st 3 hrs, wind died for last 1. We arrived at about 8:30pm friday , followed by Pegasus at about 10:30. Saturday we went into town, where we found $11 1st hr, $5/hr following for dingy dockage!  A little out of control there! Vern decided to have a word with the PJ Chamber of Commerce rep. Maybe there will be a reasonable dinghy dock next year, maybe not! We returned to the boats to find two others had joined us, Circus Maximus and Shameles. Nice evening. Sunday's trip home was a perfect close reach in 12kt wind, straight to Milford. Nice cruise for the first of the year.
Fireworks Odyssey Part 2 - Long Island harbor tour

Fri 02 - Mon 05

Great planned holiday, as is typical when betting on the weather, plans went out the window. Friday's goal was to make the long run to Cold Spring Harbor in Oyster Bay area on Long Island, then harbor hop until monday. Full Tilt and us left the dock friday about 10am with wind from the SW (from CSH), building from 20 to pushing 35. The waves started out at 2-4 feet, were 6-8 feet by mid sound. Uncomfortable ride.   We sailed on our ear with about 100% of our roller sail out and no main, making straight for the LI shore to get to flatter water. There the winds were still 30-35 and we were 10 miles east of the Port Jefferson harbor entrance (still 25 miles from CSH) needless to say we didn't make CSH. We ducked into PJ for the Friday night. Saturday morning we decided to head for either Eatons Neck or CSH, however the winds again didn't cooperate. No wind for the first hour then a pleasent 8-10 for the second hour and back to 0 for the last 3 miles to Eatons Neck. The decision then was to stay there (considering the T-Storm forecast for Sunday AM). Nice night, fireworks displays from at least 5 different towns within our view. Sunday was overcast but didn't look like we'd get the T-Storms for a while. Considering our luck to that point I should have expected them. Full Tilt was heading back to Milford, while we were going back to PJ to meet some of the other cruisers. About 4 miles out the wind picked up out of the SW from 8-10 to (again) 30-35, then the lightning and the rain. Washed all the salt from the boat from Friday's run!   This time with the wind and waves behind us we surfed our way back to PJ, arriving there in about 2 hours, just in time for the weather to clear up.  In all the comotion of getting the sails down/rolled, the genoa halyard came unclipped at the mast head, fortunatly the sail was rolled, so it stayed in place.  In PJ Mary Lou hoisted me to the top of the mast where I reattached it (and got a few cool pics). Monday's sail home was a delight in comparison to the rest of the weekend! WNW 10-15, close reached at 7-8kts straight into Milford. Lesson: Gotta take the bad with the good.
Mattituck Cruise Sat 7/31 - Sun 8/1 Nice weekend, finally had decent wind for both the to and from trips, though going to Mattituck the wind was SE, so a 24 mile trip turned into a 35 mile trip (7+ hrs). With the late arrival, we didn't make the winery tours, oh well, we made our own fun for the evening, Budweisers, jello shots, Cap'n Cherries, and Guinness's! That in turn made for a not so fun Sunday AM.  The sail back was absolutely perfect, WNW wind at 12-14, 1 foot or less seas. We laid in a course of 310 degrees magnetic with a relatively even split on the incoming and outgoing tides and in less than 5hrs Charles I. appeared out of the haze!  Nice, relatively quiet weekend! attending cruisers were Vern and Sheila, Bob and Joyce, Gary and Carol and us.
Northport Cruise  Sat 8/14 - Sun 8/15 Rained out.  One boat did make the less than pleasent ride.
WSC Fleet Parade Sat 8/21 Rained out.  We found an inside party to get trashed at!  All hail the mighty Yucca!
