Port Jefferson Race&Rendezvous 7/12/2003 Crew Heidi, Pete, Andrew, Kyle, and Jeff. Staggered start race from Milford N16 to Port Jefferson C11. Conditions started out SW 10-12. We were a little late off our start time, but were moving well right away. To make the race and return trip easier with the two young kids aboard, I opted to use my cruising sails, but we found the boat to move extreamly well anyway. We were making our way thru the fleet quite well, and were about 5 miles from the Long Island shore when the wind picked up, gusting over 20. We were way overpowered with the full main and roller #1 out, but with only a little way to the finish, we open the leechs and suffered our way to the finish. ended up 6th out of 20 or 25 boats. The party on the beach was a great time, and the return sail was one of the best trips back to Milford we've ever had. Awesome weekend.
Milford Yacht Club Invitational 8/2/2003 Crew Helen, Mike, Mark, Scott, Rich, Bill, Don, Jeff. Wind 0-5 SSW and variable, flat water. Course windward/leeward, 2 mile legs 3.5 times around, shortened to 1.5. Wind was light and variable to start which forced a short posponement. Once the wind settled a little, they started the sequence. We had a good start, on the line moving pretty well at the gun. We battled one boat up the whole leg, but couldnt sail by them, then overstood a bit for the windward mark rounding where a second boat got by (more concerned with avoiding traffic than being on the layline, mistake #1). On the leeward leg most of our class went left, so we did too. Big mistake. The wind went out about a quarter mile down this leg where we all sat. The boats rounding the windward mark near the back of the class stayed right, and took the advantage when the wind backed on the fill in. We finally noticed this and lead the left-siders on the jibe and close reach back to the leeward mark. The remaining leg was a fetch beat back to the shortened finish where we ended 4th correcting to 6th out of 9 boats. Crew work was pretty good, though work is definitely need there, tactical decision making on my part was the failure of this boat on this race.
Milford Yacht Club Labor Day Series 8/31/2003 Cruising Canvas. Crew: Andrew, Pete, Kyle, Jeff Course: AWAWF shortened to AWAF. Fun day, we decided to do this race at the last minute, Peter, myself and the two four year olds. We sailed pretty well considering I had to tack the kids before tacking the jib, but we were able to get the boat moving in the conditions, and finished third, correcting to fourth. Great sandwiches Pete!
HBC Invitational, 09/06/2003 Crew Rob, Helen, Pete, Bill, Scott, Rich, Don. Wind NE 5-10 early, dropping to 0, filling 5 SE, course windward/leeward, 2.2mi legs 3 times around shortened to 1.5 times We had a really good start, on the line moving well, but the wind was shifting and fading during the sequence, so we never tacked the entire leg. We rounded the first mark second in a pack of light race boats (2 J27's and an Impulse 26), and jibe set the chute. We were the first set and passed the one boat in front, but as the wind continued to fade, the other two boats got by us. We rounded the leeward mark third where the wind went out pretty much alltogether. We all drifted about, with us buying the right side expecting the wind to fill from there, but this time the middle of the course was the winner, we finished (and corrected to) fourth behind the 2 J27's and Impulse26. It was a beautiful day and we had a good time anyway, too bad the wind didnt cooperate. The after party was great as always.
WSC Single/Double 9/20/2003 Crew Jeff, conditions sw 8-12 minimal seas, course DS4. The course was a 2 mile windward/leeward four times around. quite a bit of work for me. Conditions were enough for me to decide to opt for my #2 (newest sail in the inventory), though it lightened some during the day and I could have gone with the #1, but a single handed sail change wasnt in the cards, so I lived with the 2. I had a pretty good start, at the pin end about five seconds late, but moving and in clear air. I felt getting left was better while most of my class, as well as the other classes, tended right. I dont think it made much difference either way (fortunately for me). I rounded the first mark with a couple minute lead over the next boat in my class, I'm giving all the boats in my class a minimum of 60sec/mi, so I needed to work to get some separation. A good rounding and pole set got me moving fast to the downhill mark where I began to leg out. Clean tacks and decent pole handling on the remaining legs expanded my separation, and on the final run I was almost a mile out in front of the other boats. Result: first to finish, correcting to first going away. fourteen minute plus difference with an almost two minute advantage corrected. Awesome day, kicked my butt but worth every minute!
Milford Yacht Club Last Chance Regatta 9/27/2003 Course NH Bell, Housatonic H1, finish. Crew Joyce, Mark, Rob, Pete, Bill, Al, Mike, Jeff. The race started out overcast and winds in the 14-15 range, so we opted to try the #3. This put the rail to the water and the boat was close to target speeds, so we went thru the start with this. The race committee put us with the A class, so we were sailing against the N/M42, N/M41, Mumm36, Thompson29, etc. all sub 100 rated boats (and half of these were sub 50), so ourselves and one other sucker (rating 119) had our work cut out for us. Not far into the first leg we found we were underpowered, so we implemented a sail change to the #2. This went pretty well, and we were quickly up to speed. As we got closer to the windward mark we found the wind to fade again, so we opted to switch again up to the #1. This was a little sloppier, but was up and filled fairly quickly. Things began to unravel for us from here. In the effort to get the #1 set and the deck cleared, we overstood the starboard tack layline by quite a bit. Then as we were bearing down on the mark, we werent paying attention to the course for the downwind leg and allowed the foredeck to setup for a bearaway set instead of the jibe set the turn required (see frustration on the overstand). In the ensuing rush to get the bag to the starboard side of the boat, the chute got out of the bag and into the water, fortunately this didnt hurt us too badly as it was retrieved fairly quickly, and when we rounded, it was mostly set back up. Only one error, the sheet was under the lifeline. Some quick work with a spare and we got it trimmed up. I then knocked a winch handle into the water. On the long downwind leg we kept the N/M41 in sight, sailing fairly well. At the turn we had a fair takedown but we found the genoa halyard was around the headstay, so that sail wasnt going all the way up. Fortunately the final leg was a close reach so the lack of full hoist wasnt as bad as it could have been had the leg been a beat. The finish had us 7th out of eight starters, correcting to 6th. Some positives for the day... some negatives too.
WSC Last Chance Regatta 9/28/2003 Crew was Walt, Rich, Rob, Bill, Al, Jeff. The Race Committee signaled postponement at the time of first gun to wait for the wind to fill. We all wallowed about for almost two hours in the rain where the RC then called the race. We all motored in and had a great time at the after party.

The 2003 Thursday Night Logbook
Week Eight 6/26/2003 Crew Rich, Mike, Al, Jeff. Conditions no wind. Course None. Race abandoned for no wind. This night was the Boat Works after race party. This looked like a good party, I helped cook.
Week Nine 7/03/2003 Crew: Cathy, Helen, Rich, Mike, Bill, Scott, Jeff. Conditions were wind NE light, no waves. Relatively slow night with the light wind, the boat handled pretty well for it's (and our) first sail of season. The skys cleared some as the evening went on, so we decided to anchor off Charles Island for the Stratford fireworks, but as night fell, so did the cloud level. The fireworks ended up being a colored glow in the clouds on the horizon. We went back to shore and closed the bars.
Week Ten 7/10/2003 Crew was Helen, Sue, Bill, Rich, Al, Donny, Jeff. Conditions were winds E 15-20, waves 2 feet, overcast skies. Course PDWS, committee Dennis and crew. With it being the first windy day of our season, we struggled to get a reef in and the #3 trimmed up. We then had a fairly lousy start, the line was skewed to the pin end where I couldnt get to in time, so we were to leaward of most of the fleet and not in the cleanest air, but the boat moved well and we nosed our way in front of a number of boats on the first tack. We then chose the shoreside line to Pond Point which turned out to be favorable, so we rounded the first mark in a good position. On the ensuing broad reach we got lazy and didnt shake out our reef, so we allowed one boat to catch up to us which was able to get by early on during the following leg. There were no more passers, and we finshed in pretty good company. Lota wind, lota waves, but the boat sailed well on the positive side of the edge of control, fun night.
Week Eleven 7/17/2003 Crew Heather, Isabella, Adam, Helen, Donny, Scott, Bill, Mark, Mike, Al, Rich, Jeff. Winds NW 8-10 fading as evening progressed. Course NDWNS. What looked like might be a pretty lousy start, in a bunch of traffic, turned out to be great. The two boats to windward and behind got out of the way and I was able to tack to port for the clear air line to the layline to the first mark. The boat moved very well, and we tacked back to starboard with only two boats in front of us, the N/M 43 and Antrim 27. We were looking at the bows of boats I've never seen the bows of before! A few of these boats took back their rightful place from us, but we hung with a couple and were actually able to take back the J120 (never would have thunk it!) on the down wind leg to W. We held off the big J on the next reaching leg (surprise) and also on the last run toward the finish. The wind faded for about a half hour where a number of boats turned in (including the big J), but we hung on and drifted toward the line until the wind filled slightly. We were back and forth with a well sailed (and freshly launched) J27 for the later half of the race, we'd gotten out in from of them in the drifing match (inertia?), but as the wind filled (to 2kts) and with only about 5 boat lengths to the finish they accelerated quicker and took back the finish. It was an awesome night for the boat and crew!
Week Twelve 7/24/2003 Crew Helen, Bill, Mark, Jeff. Wind SW 15 seas 1-2 feet. Course DPSDS. A good breeze and short crew, made for a busy night for those of us on board this night. The start was ok, we were a little late, but crossed the front starting pack behind on port tack, and got to clear air. We approached the first mark on the middle right side of the course, but it turned out the left was a little better, so we lost a couple boats on this leg. Once we rounded the mark, the long broad reach to Pond Point got us cruising, and we passed back the couple boats who'd gotten us earlier. One of the larger boats in the fleet, who'd started later than we did, cought up to us on the next leg and we went back and forth with them until they got by us on the last upwind leg. They rounded the last mark onto the final run about 5 boat lengths in front, but once we got onto the run ourselves, we reeled them in and ended up 3 or 4 lengths in front of them at the finish! 5 tons vs 15! Another fun night!
Week Thirteen 7/31/2003 Crew Melanie, Helen, Adam, Rich, Al, Don, Mark, Mike, Bill, Jeff. Wind 15 SE, seas 2-3ft. Course PDWS. Strong breeze, big waves. We had a pretty lousy start, fumbling with the new genoa halyard that wouldnt hold in the clutch, which we didnt work until well into our sequence, so as usual we were late on our approach. With that, we crossed the line near the back of the fleet, but took the line toward shore, less wave action, then tacked over to port where we steamrolled all the slower boats on the right and got us up with our usual competition. We rounded the first mark in pretty good position, but on the ensueing broad reach to the next mark we started fumbling with a sail change from the #3 to #2, which was the usual disaster and we let a couple boats get by. We bailed on the sail change till the next leg where we attempted again and did finally get it up. A little late to make a difference on the prior passers, enough to keep any more from getting by. Nice night, we need to work on the sail handling more.
Week Fifteen 8/14/2003 Crew Mike, Rich, Don, Bill, Mark, Jeff. Conditions NNW at 5, Course NDWNWS shortened to NDWNS. Fair start, a lot of the fleet stayed left, we hung near the committee boat a few boats back then tacked as soon as we got clear air. We moved pretty well in the lighter breeze to the first mark and rouded in pretty good shape, but on the ensuing broad reach we were passed by a few boats. On the following reach and upwind legs we didnt gain or lose anyone, but on the last run to the finish with the wind fade, we got past a few of those who got by us earlier and excluding the tangle at the very end finished ok. Another good night, though I'd have liked a little more wind.
Week Sixteen 8/21/2003 Crew was Lisa, Helen, Bill, Rich, Al, Mike, Don, Mark, Jeff. Course DS2, winds SW 10. Fair start, got moving pretty well to windward clearing most of the slower boats early. On the approach to the windward mark, we ended up tangling with a J35 with the driver of "that" blue boat calling the shots. they dropped us good on the approach to the first mark, but we caught them and rounded the second mark immediatly behind, we then tried to separate from them, as our only hope on chasing a faster boat, which took a few tacks, but when we came back together at the second windward turn we were again a few boat lengths behind. The final run had us catching them again, but we got lazy on the jibe on a shift and finished a few lengths behind. I was a little bummed to not be able to get this boat but then I reality checked and notice everyone else in front of us, like the J, were sub 100 rated boats, I guess we did ok. Great night.
Week Seventeen 8/28/2003 Crew was Amy, Joe, David, Kyle, Melanie, Helen, Bill, Mark, Scott, Don, AL, Rich, Jeff. Course NWDS abandoned on approach to W, wind N 0-5 Pretty terrible start, didnt get as close to pin as needed to, so at the gun we were in the midst of the fleet going slow. Once we got moving, we tacked for clear air, transoming a few boats to get there. Once in clean air we moved well and at the tack on the layline to the first mark were in front of all of whom we crossed behind plus a number more. The boat's light wind prowess had us catching the faster boat pack and stretching out on those behind when the wind pretty much went out. With the end of the season party awaiting us at the dock, much of the fleet turned and motored in. Nice night, great party as always.
Week Eighteen 9/4/2003 Race Committee
Week Nineteen 9/11/2003 This was one of those nights that is remebered for the entire off season.... Crew Helen, Adam, Pete, Don, Mike, Rich, Al, Bill, Jeff, course PEWS, Wind ESE 15-18. Decent start, middle of the line at the gun with clear air moving pretty well. The Mumm36 sailed up to us so we tacked away to clear. For the rest of the upwind leg, the boat sailed great, it loves the good wind and waves! We rounded the windward mark a little ways behind the N/M 41 then set the #3 to wing with the whisker pole and crawled up his backside! On the second half of this leg he got back a few boat lenghts, and rounded ahead, but we hung with him the remaining two legs and finished less than a minute behind. This put us finishing fifth behind the Mumm36, J120, Olson29, and the N/M41, and of these only the N/M41 and us didnt fly a chute! Afterwards we all docked at Milford Landing and had our end-of-the-season planned-impromptu party, a good time as always, though this year we got snagged for dock fees!
Week Twenty One 9/25/2003 Crew: Bill, Al, Scott, Rich, Mark, Jeff. Course DS3, wind SW 12, seas 1ft. Last offical sail day of this season. Not a great start today, I was doing deck work and didnt get to the wheel until our last minute, so I wasnt in phase with the fleet. We were at the pin end going slow and were rolled right away by all the big boats, but fairly quickly got up to speed and held a fairly good line to the first mark. The J30 was sailing well on the upwind leg and rounded before us, but on the down wind leg we cruised past him. On the second lap, the late starting N/M41 finally caught up to us, but we were able to hold him off the whole down wind leg. on the next lap he was able to get ahead on the upwind, but we hung on his transome to finish right behind. The third lap was in total darkness, so we have no idea who finished in front or behind.
